How to prevent horse theft

Although horse and property insurance can cover losses and damages, implementing various security can help prevent you from falling victim to crime.

How to prevent horse theft

Yard Security:

  • Have security cameras and motion sensor lights.

  • Lock up your tack room, field gates and other entrances.

  • Display signs on entrances about CCTV operation, microchipped horses and marked tack. This can deter thieves.

  • Check fences and gates regularly and repair if necessary.

  • Make sure gates can't be picked up off the hinges, consider having locks both sides of gates.

  • Mark tack (saddles, bridles, rugs etc...) ideally take tack home instead of leaving at the yard.

  • Remove trailers or use hitch/wheel locks or place out of sight from the public.

Horse Security:

  • Keep horse passports safe and up to date, ideally keep at home.

  • Make sure your horse is microchipped, which will make sure horse harder to sell.

  • Take photos of your horse during summer and winter. As they may appear different during different seasons.

  • Don't leave head collars on your horse or lead ropes near the horse when you'r not there. As it will make it more difficult for them to catch the horse.
