Horse riding tips during winter

Rider
-
Stay visible by wearing reflective and bright clothes.

Avoid ice as to not cause your horse to fall.
-
Plan a route and timing as to not get caught in the dark. As it gets darker sooner during autumn and winter.
-
Carry a charged phone, just incase of an accident.
-
Wear plenty of layers to keep yourself warm e.g thick coat, gloves, thick socks.
-
Avoid hard ground, as riding on it can harm your horse.
-
Tell other people your going out for a ride and your route.
-
Regularly clean and condition leather tack, as extreme weather can damage equipment.
Horse
-
Warm up more before exercise, give plenty of time to walk and stretch.
-
Your horse can wear reflective gear e.g boots, breastplate, exercise sheet.
-
Have a cool down plan after exercise to help their heart rate come down and reduce them chilling.
-
Make sure your horse is dry before putting on a rug as it can trap moisture and make your horse colder.
-
If your horse heavily sweats then consider clipping them but make sure they're correctly rugged.
-
Pay attention to your horses hooves as a build-up of snow and ice in them can cause them to walk unevenly or even slip and fall.
